While some sectors have shed jobs in recent months, the tight job market will continue in 2023 throughout much of the United States. Throughout the Houston area, businesses in sectors such as retail, manufacturing and hospitality are still experiencing a labor shortage, especially for front-line and entry level workers.

The unemployment rate in the Houston metro area is 4.0%, four percentage points higher than the national rate of 3.6%. As a result, many area employers are boosting wages to attract and retain workers. Houston metro area wages have increased by 4.2% year over year, compared to 5.2% for the entire United States.
